Sample Cover Letter

Human Resources Manager
 UNM Gym
 #1 Johnson Center Blvd. NE
 Albuquerque, NM 87106
Dear Mr. ‘Person’s Name”:
I have been interested in working for UNM Super Gym for some time now because I consider it the premier fitness facility in Albuquerque. I have several years’ experience as a self-employed personal trainer, but would prefer to work in a facility. I believe my experience, my ACE certification, and my achievements in Exercise Science will make me an excellent partner with UNM Super gym.
In addition to my knowledge of Exercise Science, I have other qualities that will help me succeed as a personal trainer. Years of experience in customer service have helped me develop the ability to understand and relate to the needs of the people I work with. Classroom presenting experience and public speaking have helped me learn to present information in a manner that is easily understood.
I have always liked helping others enjoy exercise as I do. I am committed to working as a fitness professional, and will be a mature, dependable employee with a positive attitude.
Thank you for considering me for a position at your facility. My strengths include my university-educated knowledge of fitness, my people skills, and my personal training experience. Please contact me anytime at 858-####, or page me at 530-####. I look forward to talking with you soon.
Sincerely yours,
Robert Curtis

Three Quotes From "You Majored In What?"

“Every lawyer I have met has been untrustworthy.  Therefore, all lawyers are untrustworthy.  I can’t be a lawyer.”   “My insurance salesperson is boring. Therefore, insurance is boring.  I won’t look at careers at an insurance company.”:
When I first saw these reasoning or simple statements, it immediately caught my eyes that these reasoning are logical fallacy, in which perhaps would be determined slippery slop.  In other words, just because you have meet and experienced with people who are professionals on these fields, doesn’t mean you will become one of them. These are simply, assuming facts that are not proven entirely. Because of these assumptions, people make wrong decisions on most important things. In this case would be making a bad career choice base on these experiences and lack of being open minded, and one person’s enough knowledge.  Although few lawyers could be untrustworthy, and few Insurance agents could be boring, many of them are most valued and rewarded with these careers. Therefore, one should be able to decide his or her career path base on his or her capabilities without assuming other people’s lack of performance on these careers.   As the author, Katherine Brooks, states that these “these reasoning are poor because you have developed a global perception of it (factor) of limited personal information and experience.  Ultimately, they can affect your career choices negatively”.
“Is it true that engineers make higher salaries than liberal arts major? Yes, but-HELLO- they are engineers. Do you want to be an engineer? Then go to engineering school, and be one. Problem solved.”   So, instead of trying to predicting a future you can’t see, you can start your career planning by focusing on what you now right now, and what you can learn.”
As this  words of Katherine Brooks’ inspired me, I start thinking that perhaps one best way to figure my career goals out are based on what I already know and what I’m  familiar with.  Indeed, many times we struggle in choosing a career that often and eventually turns out as unfamiliar, confusing, and even more challenging that we thought. At the end of the day, it greatly discourages us from pursuing the same career path.  If we stop, we have to start over again, and many times, many of us don’t have those supports such as financially. However, if we could start finding a way through our knowledge and experience, we would have easier way to discover what our talents really are, and what we are good at. If doing so, we wouldn’t have those regrets and struggles in our future.  In addition to that, we would make better decisions by spending less time wondering for years of trying to match a perfect career. The truth is that there are no perfect career that you have as happy as you would wish. Everything needs to be workout.  You have to work and work to better yourself.  Therefore, in order to do that, you have to work in what you are good at and what you enjoy the most.  Then Perhaps we should start gathering a lot of information to pick the right one and stick to it.
“We make better decisions when we look at the big picture, stay open –minded, and consider a variety of perspectives.” This is one of the main topics perhaps we should look at.  I believe if one makes decisions by looking at bigger picture than just limited information, is even more helpful.  As we move on in our lives, there are always things that distract us. When we don’t know much information about general ideas, or what is going on in the real world, we get blind folded easily with things that are not important to us. However, if we are open-minded and analyze different perspectives, the distracting things won’t be able to get our attention and control our behaviors.  Instead, we would be able to examine careers actually be useful not only for ourselves, also for the society as a whole.

survay results

Creativety: First and foremost, I believe in creativity. I enjoy thinking creativily and enjoy problem solving as effective and effecient as possible.
Furthermore, this result made me think and analyze more my thoughts. Creativity as I have already mensioned is one of my main goals to obtain. As Business major, I keep learning everyday and descovering more meaning of creativity. In the very competitive business world one has to be creative and innovative as possible to  predict current and future business enviroments.

Supervisory Relations: This was one of my expectations. I believe that all bosses sould be fair and considered towards their employees.  all employees should be rewarded and treated as one of the major assets of the company. If the bosses would be able to do so, not only employees would be satisfied and feel sense of belonging, also the company would strive better by working and including all employees as a whole. I believe in a democratic and cooperative.

Security: job security is very important to me. Eventhought I would make less or average salary or imcome, I would be happy and fully satisfied.  I also understand that many openions who believe that money is not that important, and others believe in capitalism and free market, therefore, to have money is essential; still, to have a comfortable lifestyle and to have abetter selfsteem in oneself is more impotant. Perhaps, almost, most of us can't figure this out easily due too many obstacles we face everyday, but until then, we must keep up with our fast paced daily lives.
